Her team is now measuring the longer-term impacts with the support of a Monash University Impact Acceleration Grant.
While Professor Lee’ s work addresses digital and economic inclusion, another academic at the School of Business is focusing on a different, but equally vital, form of equity: access to sustainable energy.
Blockchain and the Future of Clean Energy For Dr Ridoan Karim, the absence of reliable energy in some Malaysian communities represents a major sustainability gap. His work is rooted in the principle of energy justice: ensuring that clean energy access is equitable and widespread.
“ Energy justice demands that solutions be sustainable and inclusive. Peer-to-peer energy trading can empower communities to control their own energy futures.”
DR RIDOAN KARIM Senior Lecturer
Dr Ridoan’ s research explores how blockchain technology can enable secure, decentralised energy trading networks among consumers. With Malaysia achieving a record 25 % renewable energy generation in 2023, peer-to-peer models are increasingly relevant to optimise energy distribution and reduce reliance on centralised grids.
“ At Monash, research isn’ t just about discovery, it’ s about making a meaningful difference.”
GRACE
Research for a Better World Both Professor Lee and Dr Ridoan exemplify Monash University’ s commitment to research that tackles real-world challenges. Their work contributes directly to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: promoting gender equality, economic empowerment, and access to affordable, sustainable energy.

However, technological innovation must be matched by legal and policy frameworks. His research, supported by a RM50,000 grant from the Ministry of Higher Education, is examining the regulatory challenges, liability issues, and data privacy concerns that must be addressed for peer-to-peer energy trading to scale.
“ We always talk about fighting climate change, but true action means addressing the needs of every community – not just those in developed regions,” he emphasised.
