RESEARCH WHAT MATTERS

WORDS ARVINDH NAIDU
In this briefing, Professor Avvari V. Mohan, Deputy Head of School( Research and Engagement & Impact) shares how today’ s researchers are rethinking what success looks like— shifting the focus from citations and rankings to real-world transformation, partnerships, and long-term value for society.

Research impact at the School of Business means more than publishing papers- it means making a meaningful difference in the world. Guided by Monash University’ s Impact 2030 Strategy, our focus is on addressing complex global challenges including climate change, geopolitical security, and the development of thriving communities. True impact demands more than intent. It requires a deliberate approach to how we measure, translate, and scale the outcomes of our research.

“ When we talk about research impact, we have to ask ourselves— what happens once the paper is published? Does it shape thinking, influence policies, change business practices, or improve lives?”
1. Move Beyond Traditional Metrics Academic publications and journal rankings remain important, and we are proud that our colleagues publish in leading international journals. However, academic prestige tells only part of the story.
To truly measure research impact, we must also ask: > Has the research influenced public policy? > Has it helped a business transform its operations? > Has it empowered underserved communities?
2. Focus on Translation and Engagement We place strong emphasis on research translation, ensuring that academic insights are accessible, practical, and actionable. Translation happens through strategic engagement with external stakeholders. We collaborate with industry, policymakers, and community organisations through symposiums, thought leadership reports, workshops and professional development trainings, and dialogue sessions.
Initiatives like the SME ESG Start Symposium in 2025 with Alliance Bank and UNGCMYB, to present a joint report showing increased adoption of ESG among Malaysian SMEs is an example of how we turn research into platforms for real-world change.
