Things you need to know Courses and Units How to Apply At Monash, degrees are referred to as courses and subjects are referred to as units. Students take a series of units as part of their course. As a Study Abroad or Exchange student, you can select from over 6000 coursework units at Monash. You may use the following link to search the Monash handbook for courses offered: monash.edu/pubs/handbooks. • For exchange applicants, you'll need to be nominated by your home university, after which you will be invited to apply by Monash Abroad. Language of Instruction Application Deadlines Academic instruction is conducted in English at all Monash campuses. Academic Year The academic year runs from the end of February to the beginning of November and is divided into two semesters, each with a mid-semester break: Semester 1: late February to June Semester 2: late July to November Each semester has 12 weeks of classes and the majority of classes have three to four contact hours per week per unit. These are followed by a three week exam period. You must study a full-time load of on-campus units while at Monash. This is normally 24 credit points made up of four units or 18 credit points to satisfy visa regulations. Assessment Assessment may be made up of written or oral assignments (or tests) throughout the semester and/or an exam at the end of each semester. Eligibility Requirements Before you apply to come to Monash, you should ensure you meet the following entry requirements. You must have: • completed at least one full year (half year for postgraduate) at your home university • achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 or 60 per cent or equivalent • met Monash English language requirements (monash.edu/admissions/english-language-requirements). Monash Study Abroad and Exchange is also available to postgraduate students. • For fee-paying study abroad applicants, your study abroad agent or home university may be able to help you complete the application. Study at Monash from February to June July to November Submit your application by 1 October 1 March Please email [email protected] for an extension if you cannot meet these deadlines. Tuition Fees If you are a study abroad student, you will pay your fees to Monash Malaysia (or your home university) for the units (subjects) you study while you are at Monash. Exchange students do not need to pay additional tuition fees. For more information on the latest tuition fees, please check monash.edu.my/study-abroad/inbound/financial. Student Pass and Visa (applicable to all exchange and study abroad students) Before entering Malaysia, all international students require a Student Pass and possibly an entry visa depending on your country of origin. There are different requirements and application processes, therefore, it is important to understand the travel requirements to Malaysia. You are required to pay the Student Pass application fee for one semester or for two semesters in full, depending on the duration of your study, upon accepting your exchange or study abroad offer. The fee includes the following: • • • • • Processing fee Student Pass fee Medical and health insurance Health screening i-Kad * You are advised to be certain in accepting your exchange or study abroad offer as the Student Pass application fee is non-refundable. Within seven days of arriving in Malaysia, you will have to undergo a post–arrival medical screening and submit your passport to the International Student Pass office at Monash Malaysia for an official Student Pass endorsement in your passport, which allows for multiple entries into Malaysia. This is a compulsory requirement of the Malaysian Immigration authorities. Please ensure you are familiar with the Student Pass and visa requirements before arriving in Malaysia.
