O
pened in 1983, Monarch Beach Golf Links is one of the few places along the
Southern California coast where you can tee off, drive and putt to the sound of
surf. But how do you make one of the best golf courses in California even better?
The stunning scenery was already there, including a breathtaking panorama of
the Pacific that often includes Santa Catalina Island in the dreamy distance, and so was the
challenge of mastering a par-70 championship course that rates among the region’s best.
There’s also a sense of history, given the fact that golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr.
designed Monarch Beach to resemble the famed golf links of Scotland, where the sport was
born many centuries ago. Additionally, golfers gain access to a full range of amenities, from
upscale overnight stays and gourmet dining at Monarch Beach Resort to a fully stocked pro
shop and GolfBoards or Phat Scooters to help you get around the course.
But General Manager Eric Lohman, PGA, and his team came up with something that
raised the bar even higher: a Waterman Caddie program that combines the skills of a veteran
golf caddie with the expertise of a luxury hotel concierge and the insider knowledge that
only a longtime local can render.
