Monarch Beach Resort Moments Magazine Issue 6 - Page 15

Monarch Beach Resort is the first hotel in the country to offer its guests the RunGo app , for which MacDonald designed six different routes to help guide runners through the safest and most picturesque areas around Dana Point . From the resort , guests can run on any one of those paths with visual directions and by listening to built-in , turn-by-turn audio from their headphones .

The verified routes that MacDonald designed range from 2.21 to 8.12 miles , including a 3-mile run around the golf course , an out-and-back Salt Creek Trail run and four others that take runners through local beaches and parks . Each route on the app is accompanied by a description that details the scenery and points of interest . For the area surrounding the resort , those points include the on-property botanical gardens , the Monarch Beach Golf Links greens and Salt Creek Beach .
Every route is unique , but MacDonald ’ s primary intention was to get runners away from the typical road path and direct them toward the ocean . His personal favorite is the Salt Creek Beach Loop .
“ It ’ s a really simple run down to the beach . It takes you through the botanical garden and the golf course and the Salt Creek corridor . It gets you on the beach for just a quick run ,” MacDonald explains . “ We have so many people who come here and never get to the beach , so whenever I talk to somebody who ’ s just here for a couple days , I tell them to do that run to get that beach connection .”
Dana Point also serves as a landmark for whale migrations throughout the year and has even been dubbed the “ whale capital of the West .” Luckily , the Beach and Parks 5-mile stretch , the Strands Beach Run , the Beach and Harbor Run , and the Salt Creek Beach Loop all direct runners to unique viewing points that are perfect for whale watching .
“ What ’ s really special about this area is the way that Dana Point shoots out from the coast . You can watch whale migrations swimming by and you can see them blasting off as you ’ re running or walking along the coast ,” MacDonald notes . “ It ’ s pretty spectacular .”
In addition to the unique points of interest that surround Monarch Beach Resort , MacDonald wanted to provide runners with a more mindful approach to the run with the voice feature of the RunGo app . The routes were designed to not only guide runners through safe and scenic areas , but to create a meditative escape . “ We used a lot of the voice clips to give mindful moments , to just remind people to take a second when they ’ re at the beach to stare out into the ocean and really center themselves for a moment ,” MacDonald says . “ Or , when they go up the stairs , to set an intention for those stairs .
“ While I think it ’ s important for people to use their run as their selfcare and meditation , running is such an opportunity to work through something , as well ,” he adds . “ So , if something is stressful , we want to give people the reminder that they can use that run to move through whatever that is .”
