Max’s 2 older brothers have collections that everyone makes a big fuss over. Benjamin collects stamps, Karl collects coins, and neither one ever shares their treasures with Max. So Max decides to start a collection of his own. Max is going to collect words. He starts with small words that he cuts out of old newspapers and magazines, but soon his collection has spilled out into the hall. All the while, his brothers are watching. Benjamin brags that he has one thousand stamps. Karl is just a few coins short of five hundred. But a thousand stamps is really just a bunch of stamps, and a lot of coins is only a heap of money. Max’s growing pile of words, however, can make a story. This is a story about a little boy's ingenuity and how he teaches his older brothers that sharing and being creative together is the most fun of all.
At-Home Activity:
Using kid-safe scissors, children can
cut letters, words and/or phrases
out of old magazines, coloring
books, activity books, flyers, or
newspapers. (My three kids spent
have spent hours doing this on
rainy afternoons.) Then the whole
family can work together to form
sentences, funny phrases, or even
a whole story!
I love this activity because it
recycles piles of old magazines, allows
my three kids to work together easily
on an activity, & enables them to be
creative and silly. It has even helped
my youngest be more interested in
learning to read on her own.
