MY THOUGHTS ON

by Heather Caserta

Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the

Lies About Who You Are So You Can

Become Who You Were Meant to Be

by Rachel Hollis

This book has been making the rounds, and I’m a personal development junkie, so I had to give it a listen. It had extra impact because Rachel herself narrates, and I could just imagine having a phone conversation with her as she relayed these stories and anecdotes to help me through real (or sure-to-happen-to-someone-I-know) situations through her own life experiences. She is completely transparent and authentic as she navigates what lies about herself she used to believe, and shares lessons to help others if they are telling themselves the same lies.

From “I peed my pants last week” to “only you have the power to change your life,” this book has something for everyone. While Rachel is a Christian and her Christianity pops up every once in a while, don’t let it deter you from picking this one up or continuing to read if you get to one of those passages if that’s not what you believe. The book is only lightly peppered with spirituality, and hey - it’s just Rachel being herself, which is the whole point of this book - that we all be ourselves, and not who someone else wants us to be.

Personally, I really liked the book, and found that it was the perfect addition to my own little “girl power” trilogy with “Grace, Not Perfection” by Emily Ley and “Girl Code” by Cara Alwill Leyba. If you don’t like listening to a memoir/advice book with a lot of “I” and “me” stories about the author, give it a miss. If, however, you want to see that women really are alike at the core of ourselves and in the lies we tell ourselves, and maybe start being more truthful and authentic with yourself, give it a read or a listen.
