In the fall of 2017 more than 56 percent of students on campuses
across the United States were women.
Within engineering, however, and in mechanical engineering in
particular, the national trend doesn't hold. At Virginia Tech, less
than 17 percent of sophomores enrolled in mechanical engineering
are female, while women make up more than 42 percent of the un-
dergraduate population, and just over 22 percent for all engineering
disciplines.
We spoke to female faculty members and asked them about their
experiences in the field and what advice they'd give to young women
considering a degree in mechanical engineering.
