LEADERSHIP LEAGUE CITY – FINDING CONFIDENCE

In the words of the great leader , John Maxwell , “ confidence in oneself is the cornerstone of leadership . It is difficult for those who do not believe in themselves to have much faith in anyone else . Self-confidence brings confidence in others .”

During a recent interview conversation with Angelica Hanley , the new executive director of M . I . Lewis Social Service Center and a League City Leadership 2021 class member , she shared how the leadership class helped her . Hanley , a former team member of United Way Galveston County Mainland , knew in her heart she was ready to take on new responsibilities and challenges ; however , she had doubts whether she was prepared for the new role . Hanley said , “ being the mother of two young boys is my priority . However , meeting the other women who are mothers in the League City Leadership class who shared balancing motherhood and career , supported and encouraged me , I found the confidence to apply for the job .” During the job interview , she said , “ I felt confident , prepared , and knew I was making the right decision .”
A few fun facts about Hanley , she is a born on the island girl ; was raised across the Causeway in Texas City . She attended Galveston Catholic School and then O ’ Connell High School , Galveston . She graduated from the University of Texas-San Antonio with a degree in Sociology and a Master ’ s of Public Administration with an emphasis in Non-profit Management . While in college , Hanley served in Americorps , worked at homeless shelters in San Antonio and Houston . What inspired her to give back to her community ? Her high school friend
was Jessica Cain , who when missing in Galveston County in 1997 . She devoted the early years of her career to Jessica and often thought if I worked in shelters , my friend would maybe walk in one day . Hanley said , “ Jessica was my inspiration in the early years to keep working during the hard times . The despair I saw in so many , it was her memory , that helped me to be a smiling face to those in need .” She continues , “ to this day , I draw on Jessica ’ s spirit to help me stay positive and smiling while being of service to those in need .”
