In the fast-paced and always-changing dynamic of our world, the unfortunate reality is that any workplace may be
faced with an unanticipated emergency, disaster or crisis at any time.
Such events may include any number of occurrences ranging from employee illness or injury to fi re, fl ooding or
signifi cant weather incident. Beyond these more “typical” emergencies, employers now more than ever are faced
with new and even more potential threats that could be lurking around the corner at any time. For example, in 2016,
there were more than 2 million incidents of workplace violence reported across America. Regrettably, the possibility
of an active shooter and other serious types of violence, cyber-attacks, and even terrorism, must be recognized as
potential threats in today’s workplace. With this in mind, employers have a responsibility to keep their employees and
customers safe in the event of emergency, disaster, crisis or other hazards that affect the workplace. Accordingly,
every business can benefi t by taking a cue from the Boy Scout motto to “Be Prepared.” This session will explore
steps that employers can take to prepare for those events that they hope will never come and how HR can help in
this process.
