Human resources professionals and employment
attorneys are often understandably focused on the numerous and familiar federal
employment laws that regulate the workplace, such as Title VII, the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA). Ignoring important state employment laws, however, can be a
costly mistake. As an extension of a previous B3, this session will provide a more in
depth review of and practical guidance regarding select state-specifi c Pennsylvania
employment laws (including the Wage Payment and Collection Law (WPCL), Inspection
of Employment Records Law, and Criminal Records History Information Act and discuss
new and pending state employment-related legislation. This includes a compromise
bill passed by the PA Senate and now before the State House that would increase the
minimum wage and potential future amendments to Pennsylvania’s Minimum Wage Act
and more closely align state minimum wage and overtime requirements with federal
law, which if it comes to fruition will be a welcome change for employers.
