Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Lackawanna College John Wiercinski recently
announced the Board’s appointment of Dr. Jill A. Murray as the ninth president of
Lackawanna College. She will be the first woman to serve in that role and will succeed
retiring president Mark Volk.
Dr. Murray currently serves as the College’s executive vice president and chief
innovation officer. From 2008-2012, she operated as the College’s vice president of
academic affairs, where she was responsible for developing and overseeing all of
Lackawanna College’s curricula. She developed academic programming and support
services, which helped drive student enrollment and retention.
Dr. Murray holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from The University of
Scranton, a Master of Arts degree in philosophy from the State University of New York at
Albany, and a Ph.D. in Human Development from Marywood University.
President Volk, a retired U.S. Army colonel, served as the College’s executive vice
president from 2006 to 2012 and vice president for operations and plans from 2005 to
2006. During his tenure at the College, he expanded the campus footprint, opened
new centers, improved facilities, added academic programs, including the College’s first
bachelor’s degrees, and led the College through record enrollment periods.
Geisinger has appointed Jaewon Ryu, M.D., J.D., as its
new president and chief executive officer. Dr. Ryu, who has
served as interim president and chief executive officer since
November 2018 and executive vice president and chief
medical officer since September 2016, becomes the seventh
chief executive officer in Geisinger’s 104-year history.
Prior to joining Geisinger, Dr. Ryu served as President of
Integrated Care Delivery for Humana in Louisville, Kentucky,
where he was responsible for Humana’s owned and joint
ventured care delivery practices, as well as Transcend,
a management services organization assisting affiliated
practices to adopt population health under value-based reimbursement. Before this, he
served as the chief medical officer at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences
System in Chicago. He has held various leadership roles at Kaiser-Permanente, the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and as a White House Fellow at the
Department of Veterans Affairs. He is an emergency medicine physician with a license to
practice in Pennsylvania and California, and serves as a diplomate on the American Board
of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Ryu was recently named to Modern Healthcare’s list of the 50 Most Influential
Physician Executives, checking in at number 19 on the annual compilation of proven
leaders who have made a noticeable impact on their organizations and the healthcare
industry as a whole.
David K. Vawdrey, Ph.D., a biomedical informatics executive,
has been named Geisinger’s Chief Data Informatics
Officer. In this role, Dr. Vawdrey will be responsible for
implementing transformational technologies and bringing
value to Geisinger by harmonizing data across the clinical
care, research and health plan enterprise. Dr. Vawdrey has
been on the faculty of Columbia University’s Department of
Biomedical Informatics since 2007. He was also the founding
director of NewYork-Presbyterian’s Value Institute.
