2 • The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce
At our board retreat held this past spring, many of the
ideas and suggestions that were expressed included
the word “access.” Our members want to have access
to public officials. They also want The Chamber to
have access to them, as well as to be recognized as
the “voice” of the business community.
To that end, we are strengthening our efforts in the
field of Government Affairs. Bill Schoen, who has
been assisting our Skills in Scranton organization, will
take on the duties of Government Affairs consultant,
monitoring legislation and drafting position papers.
The Government Affairs Committee , co-chaired by
Atty. Rick Bishop and Tim McGrath, will begin holding
regular committee meetings in order to address
issues in a timely manner and to be proactive rather
than reactive.
A few years ago, we took the unprecedented step
of partnering with the City of Scranton in retaining
a consultant to assist in the City’s financial recovery
process. Some questioned that move, but it was the
right thing to do.
We also believe that giving greater emphasis to our
Government Affairs program is the right thing to do
and that now is the right time to do it.
