The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed state Sen . John Blake to speak to the Chamber Board of Directors regarding the Commonwealth ’ s proposed closure of the State Correctional Institute ( SCI ) at Waymart . The Chamber also participated in a community town hall in Carbondale with local business and elected officials to demonstrate support for the facility . In addition , Chamber President Bob Durkin and Board President Mark Volk co-wrote a letter to Gov . Tom Wolf asking him to keep the prison open . Governor Wolf ultimately decided to keep SCI Waymart open .
The Chamber extends its condolences to the entire University of Scranton community on the recent passing of former president Rev . Joseph Allan Panuska , S . J . Fr . Panuska was the University ’ s 22nd president , serving from 1982-1998 .
Chamber President Bob Durkin recently spoke to students in state Sen . John Blake ’ s Student Ambassador program , which gives 22 high school students in our area the chance to take a behind-the-scenes look at working as an elected official .
U . S . Senator Bob Casey recently visited the Chamber , where he hosted an economic development roundtable with area elected officials and dignitaries . Sen . Casey also unveiled his Community Economic Assistance Act at the event .
The Chamber hosted its Mardi Gras Business Card Exchange at Four Points by Sheraton in Scranton .
