LEADERSHIP EMERGING LEADERS VISIT THE PORT OF GALVESTON

Leadership League City - After months of extensive planning , lead by class member Tomorrow Orsak who demonstrated her attention to detail with her open communication style , the big day finally arrived . Wednesday , May 5 , was filled with excitement as the class gathered in the early morning at College of the Mainland , League City Campus . The trip to Galveston Island required a change-up of the class routine , starting with a 7:30 AM bus trip . But , showing their leadership style and committment , the class embraced the change-up by focusing on the day ’ s events .

The objective for the leadership ’ s group visit to the Port of Galveston ; to engage , build better friendships and goodwill , gain community knowledge with the goal of becoming ambassadors of the resources and organizations within Galveston County .
Upon arrival at the Port of Galveston , Cristina Galego , Public Relations Manager , and David Anderson greeted the League City Leadership team with warm island greetings , friendly , informative conversations , and a delicious breakfast . Then it was time to get down to business . In his presentation , Rodger Rees , Director / CEO for the Port of Galveston , informed the group of the vital role the Port of Galveston plays throughout Galveston County . The Port of Galveston by the numbers : 2,207,852 cruise passengers . $ 2.1 billion economic impact . 4 Million Short Tons , and 14,103 jobs . With these impressive numbers , they refer to the Port as “ The Port of Everything ” - cruise , cargo , and commercial business development .
After his informative presentation , Rees had an impromptu “ meet and greet ” by engaging in great conversation with his visitors . Soon after , it was off to tour the Port . With Jeffrey Thomas , Chief Engineer at the wheel , and Brian Leadingham from Texas Seaport Museum helping out , we boarded the pontoon for a spectacular and informative water tour . The group got an

up-close and personal viewing of the Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze ships , both in Port , awaiting Center for Disease ( CDC ) safety guidelines to start cruising , again !
The Port of Galveston was established on October 17 , 1825 ; it is the oldest Port in the Gulf of Mexico , west of New Orleans . Located on the upper Texas coast , covering more than 850 acres on the eastern end of Galveston and Pelican Islands . The Port is 9.3 miles from the open Gulf or approximately 30 minutes sailing time . The Port is municipally owned by the City of Galveston , functioning as a “ Landlord Port ” and managed by the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees . The Port is self-sustaining and does not receive any taxpayer funding . With nearly 100 employees , total capital assets of $ 147.823 million , and currently generating approximately $ 39 million in operating revenue . The Port of Galveston is one of Texas ’ major deepwater seaports and is the fourth busiest cruise ship home-port in North America .
