GET OUTDOORS!
With the coronavirus keeping so many
of us cooped up throughout the late
winter and spring, it’s not unusual for
everyone to be experiencing some
cabin fever. Now as the temperatures
outside start to rise
and we have more
daylight hours, experts
are recommending
that we find a way to
get outdoors, visiting
parks and trails or even
taking a stroll around the
neighborhood.
Experts agree that
many outdoor spaces
can provide a safe,
practical way to preserve
your health during
challenging times. In fact,
research has shown that
outdoor areas can have
significant and wideranging
health benefits.
People who have
access to parks or more
walkable neighborhoods,
for example, tend to be
more physically active,
which relieves symptoms
of stress, depression and
anxiety. According to the
Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, ad blend of
activities to stay healthy including at least:
• 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a
week
• 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity a week
Additionally, the Physical Activity Guidelines for
Americans recommends that kids and teens ages 6 to
17 get 60 minutes of activity every day. Kids younger
than 6 need physical activity, as well — it helps support
their growth and development. For more information
about how to get up and get moving, visit https://
health.gov/moveyourway.
Of course, public health officials strongly urge
everyone to continue social distancing practices by
staying at least six feet away from others, wearing a
mask that covers the nose and mouth, and avoiding
large crowds in order to prevent spreading the virus.
Visitors at parks, pools, and other common-use outdoor
areas should avoid playground equipment, benches,
bike racks, and other shared facilities to prevent
transmission. It’s also wise to carry some convenient
travel-sized hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes, just in
case.
Even if it’s just a walk around the block, tending to a
vegetable garden, or doing some yard work, getting
outside and getting some fresh air can do wonders
for the body and spirit. Encourage your clients and
customers to start soaking in a little sun to help the
body produce much-needed vitamin D. Of course,
they’ll want to protect their skin by wearing sunscreen.

While we all begin to come out of hibernation and
experience everything the great outdoors has to offer,
common sense should prevail in using social distancing
to keep everyone happy and healthy.
