Don’ t Let High Energy Bills Cut Into Your Summer Budget
In Texas, the rising summer temperatures make it a challenge to keep homes comfortable and energy budgets affordable. Here are a few tips to help beat the summer heat:
1. Schedule a maintenance checkup for your air conditioner. Qualified air conditioning specialists can determine any service your unit needs to run efficiently. Some simple tasks will improve air conditioner performance such as cleaning up any leaves or debris on or around the outside unit and changing AC filters regularly. 2. Install ceiling fans to help circulate air throughout the house. 3. Check insulation around doors and windows. A tight seal around doors and windows keeps cold air in and the heat out. 4. Make sure the air vents throughout the house are not blocked so air flows freely. 5. Keep the doors and windows closed. With the children home in the summer, pool or backyard fun often leads to doors being left open.
6. Enjoy outdoor summer activities and cook on the grill instead of on the stove or in the oven. Cooking inside raises indoor temperatures and consumes energy. Outdoor activities will also reduce computer and TV energy usage.
7. Install solar screens or awnings on windows. Window coverings help window efficiency by shading the glass so it stays cooler. They also lower the amount of UV rays that enter the house which raise temperatures and fade furniture and carpet. Blinds and window coverings are another way to cut back on sun entering your house.
8. Install a programmable thermostat and set the household temperature based on times you are home. The house doesn’ t have to be as cool when you are outside or away from home. 9. Make sure your dryer vent is clean so the hot air exits the house like it’ s supposed to.
In short, spend more time enjoying the outdoors, seal it up, keep it clean and shade it where possible. Enjoy your summer and don’ t forget the sunscreen!
