Helping Locally United Way Galveston County Mainland fights for the Health, Education and Financial Stability of every person in every community. This mission isn’t achieved alone. UWGCM achieves this by supporting its 30 Partner Agencies that work hard to serve Galveston County area’s unique set of needs. Some of these agencies include, Gulf Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters, Devereux Texas, Interfaith Caring Ministries, and Family Service Center of Galveston County. Together, UWGCM and its partner agencies work hand in hand to improve lives in the neighborhoods in Galveston County. The Fluor Program UWGCM and Fluor have teamed up to promote an entry-level craft training program aimed at helping people broaden their knowledge and find jobs in high-demanded industrial fields, including electrical, pipe fitting, and instrumentation. Training takes place at the Fluor Craft Training Center in Pasadena where eligible applicants participate in a free 12-week craft-training program and become NCCER certified.   Since March 2017, UWGCM has hosted quarterly on-site informational sessions for residents in Galveston County to learn about Fluor’s program and offer on-site applications. Since then, UWGCM has seen 17 of its applicants dedicate their time, finish training and graduate from the 12-week program. As of today, 11 of the 17 students found employment in the workforce and are now financially empowered and independent. Recent News Not only does the United Way continue to operate its annual campaign, UWGCM steps up when there is an urgent need in its community. As we all know, Hurricane Harvey did not discriminate and affected all walks of life. This storm demonstrated how United Way helped people in need despite their financial background. UWGCM provided help when people desperately needed it. Through its disaster relief fund and generous donations, UWGCM has dispersed over $1.5 million into Galveston County. This money went to UWGCM partner agencies, school district foundations, and other local non- profits to help with immediate disaster relief and long-term recovery. More recently, UWGCM hosted its Firefighter Games event; an annual community event put on by the Texas City Fire Department and City of Texas City to benefit the United Way. This year’s proceeds totaled to $20,000 and were donated to the Santa Fe Texas Education Foundation.
