As an academic health center , the University of Texas Medical Branch ( UTMB Health ) is committed to providing excellent service and care to patients while training the next generation of physicians , nurses , and health professionals in the communities we serve . Thanks to results of the Best Care initiative , UTMB Health was recently recognized with a prestigious national award for achieving excellence in patient care . Earning five stars , the university is one of 12 academic health centers nationwide ( only one in Texas ) to receive the 2017 Vizient Bernard A . Birnbaum , MD , Quality Leadership Award . This award recognizes UTMB for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance as measured by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study ; 107 academic health institutions participated in this year ’ s study .
UTMB Health joins Mayo Clinic – Rochester , NYU Langone Health , Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin , Rush University Medical Center , Penn State Health Milton S . Hershey Medical Center , University of Utah Health , UC Health University of Colorado Hospital , Lehigh Valley Health Network , The University of Kansas Hospital , Nebraska Medicine and Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in receiving the award .
