Diagnosing breast cancer as early as possible
usually means you have more effective
treatment options. While mammograms are an
important first step for detecting breast cancer,
monthly breast self-examination can identify
lumps or changes in tissue, which may indicate
further investigation. If you notice hard knots or
thickening inside the breast or underarm, skin
dimpling, or other changes, inform your doctor
as soon as possible.
Women with an average risk for breast cancer typically begin annual mammograms at age 40. The Houston Methodist
Breast Care Center at St. John is a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology and is proud
to offer the gold standard in mammography – 3-D digital mammography – which delivers higher resolution than
conventional mammograms. This is one of the most effective tools available in diagnosing breast cancer at an early stage,
before tumors are large enough to be felt or cause any symptoms. In addition, 3-D mammography reduces the rate of
false-positive readings, ensures fewer callbacks for additional images and enables doctors to more accurately locate an
abnormality in the breast. Every mammogram at the Breast Care Center is reviewed by fellowship-trained dedicated breast
radiologists.
A doctor’s order is not necessary for your screening mammogram, and online scheduling is easy. Just visit

If you’re at high risk or over 40 with average risk, be sure to schedule your annual 3-D mammogram – which delivers higher
resolution than conventional mammograms. Online scheduling is quick and easy.
