SLOAN President, Foundation Board Rotary Club of League City [email protected] • 832-315-0502 ROTARY CLUB of League City R otary is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. A few of their outreach programs include: Mobile Food Distribution Many families struggle each month to provide food for their families. Rotary provides assistance by operating a Mobile Food Distribution Center each second Thursday of the month at League park from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Families can receive fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. Approximately 120 families are served each month. This translates to almost 500 individuals. To help with expenses, sponsorships are available for $250. Volunteers, churches, and organizations interested in helping distribute food are asked to contact the Rotary Club of League City. Flu Clinics To aid in helping families stay healthy and keeping children in school, the Rotary Club of League City provides flu shots in the fall through four elementary schools in League City. The flu clinics are open to the community. This past year almost 1,000 influenza vaccines were given to area residents. Adult Spelling Bee Last year, an additional FUN-Raiser was added.  It was the First Annual Rotary Adult Spelling Bee. Dr. Greg Smith was the Beekeeper, calling words for the teams to spell.  Teams of three competed for the title of Spelling Bee Team Champ.  Vaccines, Stingers and Help from the Hive made the game extra exciting! Each team had the chance to purchase these “helpers” to enhance the team’s ability to win. The date for the event will be early November. If you are interested in learning more about Rotary or becoming a Rotarian, join us for our weekly Thursday meeting at Luna’s Mexican Restaurant, 6555 South Shore Blvd. from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. or visit our web site www.leaguecityrotary.org GET INVOLVED Polio Eradicating polio worldwide is a goal of Rotary International. Each December, The Rotary club of League City raises funds to support this project through a Polar Bear Plunge. Rotarians solicit donations and jump into the frigid waters of the South Shore Harbour Resort pool. With matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the eradication of this debilitating and often fatal disease is very near. Brews N’ More III To aid in continuing our outreach projects, the Rotary Club of League City will hold their major fund raiser, 42 Brews N’ More III on Thursday, March 28 th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at South Shore Harbour Resorts’ Marina Ballroom. Tickets are $40.00 and will provide access to tastings from six local breweries, food and music.
