It’s crucial to make sure your hair is completely dry (after washing or applying a styling product) before using your heat styling tool (other than your blow-dryer), as you don’t want to cause unnecessary damage, split ends or broken strands. Hot shower temperatures can also have an adverse effect on your colored hair. Hot water in general can dry out your hair and scalp, making strands more brittle and prone to breakage. But, super-hot water in combination with colored hair can have an even greater consequence. The excessive heat opens up your hair cuticle and can release some of your color, causing premature fading. It’s best to shampoo your hair with slightly warm water and then rinse with cold water after conditioning. Shampoo less often Speaking of holding on to your hair’s natural oils, changing up your shampoo routine can also help maintain your colored hair. Don’t wash your hair any more often than every other day, as shampoo can wash away those natural moisturizing agents and encourage premature color fading (unless you’re using the right products, more on that to come). On the non-shampoo days, use the opportunity to try a new style and break up your routine a bit! Your color will thank you for it. 32 MOMENTUM Choose the right products To maintain your color for as long as possible, make sure to choose products that are specifically formulated for colored hair.
