Being thankful needs to be regular and happen more than just once a year at Thanksgiving. If you don’t make an effort to feel gratitude regularly, you’re not going to get the benefits. It’s kind of like going to the gym once a year. What would be the good of that? Gratitude is a habit we develop. It’s not just a spontaneous emotion. Gratitude is appreciating, focusing on, and being thankful for what we have and not what we don’t have. Practicing gratitude is challenging but these 5 tips can keep you thankful all year long! Say “Thank you!” Sometimes, just being acknowledged for a simple gesture can change someone’s mood. Wouldn’t it be nice to be the trendsetter of the day? What a beautiful thing to have the ability to enhance one person’s mood who in turn enhances another’s, and another’s, and so on. Tell someone “thank you” for holding the door open for you and they just might hold it open for you again tomorrow. Find the silver lining in everything Even if you’re having the worst day ever, there is usually a lesson to be learned or an unlikely friendship to be made. If nothing else, today’s struggles will make tomorrow seem that much better! Being caught in the rain makes you appreciate a warm, dry escape, doesn’t it? Live with no regrets If you are truly grateful, you will live with no regrets. 28 MOMENTUM You’ll make an effort to say “I love you” before you hang up the phone and embrace your loved ones once more before hitting the road. Think before you speak (or post on social media). Never allow your last words to be hurtful. If you must speak your mind, end it on a high note. “You really frustrate me, but I love you anyway!” Pay it forward If you have an abundance of things to be grateful for, share! Give someone else something to be grateful for. This doesn’t mean just material things. If you have a plethora of time, help your neighbor rake their leaves. They just might shovel your snow! Have some extra garden goodies? Take them to a food bank and feed another family. That family will surely be grateful. Mom summed this one up with, “ Treat others as you would like to be treated.” Find beauty in everything (even the small things) Grateful for a really good cup of coffee? A beautiful sunset? A fireplace on a winter day? A family that truly appreciates you? A satisfying career? Don’t take anything for granted. Just the feeling of being gracious can turn your day around. Give it a try:) Make a list of at least 10 things you are grateful for today-even if they’re selfish. If something made your day better, it’s got a reservation on the list! It’s important to have an attitude of gratitude in order to be constantly aware of the positives in your life. Your attitude towards life changes when you are thankful. Gratitude causes us to be more positive, gracious and loving-better versions of ourselves.
