BALAYAGE vs.
FOIL HIGHLIGHTS
T
here are so many options to achieve those
beautiful blonde locks you desire; however,
your end result dictates what technique is
used.
BALAYAGE: A French colouring technique
developed in the 70’s, Balayage is a freehand technique
that is truly artistic and can be customized to each
guest. Balayage means to sweep. The desired look is
a well-blended, sun-kissed, natural look without harsh
lines. This is a great choice when wanting to achieve
dimension and a soft transition from the root color to the
ends. Because of the skill set used to achieve this look
as well as the time involved, the cost is typically a little
higher than highlights initially, but requires less time and
cost for maintenance.
FOIL HIGHLIGHTS: Also a great option for blonding
and has a more uniform look than balayage. There is
still control with placement of the lightener, however,
the technique is typically done close to the root and
will show a more distinct line when the hair grows out.
Foil highlights are a
beautiful option when
done correctly and are
a little less expensive
to do initially, but the
maintenance is going to
be greater than freehand
techniques.
BABYLIGHTS: Also
a foiling technique
where placement can
be controlled to achieve
a desired look. A great
option for extreme
blonding, Babylights
require “baby” sections
to obtain a lighter
result than traditional
highlights. Maintenance
will be required as the
hair grows.

any service. Your job
is to communicate
the “what”. It’s the
stylist responsibility to
determine the “how”.
