Wireless SECURITY TIPS
S
ummertime is normally when we take time off
and go on vacation. A chance to disconnect
from our work to enjoy time with family and
the wonderful sites of our country. There are
some of us that can’t leave work at the office
and find ourselves on a free Wi-Fi to get some work
done. If you’re not careful, you can pick up a virus that
could lead to ransomware on your computer.
Here are a few things you can be aware of while you
are out to keep your data safe.
a. Be aware: Public wi-fi is essentially unsafe – so be
aware.
b. Remember: any device could be at risk, whether it’s
a smartphone, tablet, or laptop all are vulnerable to
the wireless risks.
c. Treat all wi-fi links cautiously: Don’t connect to
an unknown wi-fi connection assuming its safe.
Question everything. The cybercriminals work hard
to get your information.
d. Try to verify the wireless connection: There are
bogus links out there. If you’re at a coffee shop,
hotel, etc. that offers wi-fi. Ask a person that works
there about the wi-fi they use for guests. Make sure
you are using the right one.

e. Use a VPN: By using a VPN you will effectively be
using a private tunnel that encrypts all your data
that passes through the network.
f. Avoid using specific types of website: Avoid
social media, banking, shopping websites (or
any other website) that stores your personal
information and/or credit card or bank
information.
g. Consider using your smartphone: If you find
yourself needing to access a website that store your
personal information; consider using your phone
via your mobile network instead of the Wi-Fi.
h. Protect your devices against cyberattacks:
Protect your devices with a rigorous anti-malware
and security solution and make sure you keep it
updated.
i. Make sure you are not sharing your files: Make
sure you have turned off your file sharing and
Airdrop Options on all your devices.
j. Turn off the Wi-Fi: When you are not using the Wi-
Fi; turn it off. This is a nice security habit to get into.
k. Consider purchasing a Mobile Hotspot: If you
travel often, I would consider doing this.
I wish everyone a fun and safe summer.
