What Is Chiropractic?

If you were to ask 10 chiropractors that question you’ d probably get 10 similar but different answers. To each doc it might mean something a little different to them.
What chiropractic is to me, in the most basic sense, is giving people back quality of life. If you are living in pain your quality of life suffers. Difficult things are more miserable and enjoyable things are harder to enjoy. Once you get your patient out of pain they start enjoying life to the fullest and are able to enjoy things the pain prevented them from before.
Another way to describe chiropractic is“ the why question.” As chiropractors we ask the question why, why is this hurting, why is this functioning correctly, why is this not working the way it was designed to work. Pain is the body telling you there is something wrong. Very rarely does your body hurt for no reason at all. Simply treating pain does not address the question of why does it hurt. Chiropractors treating the symptoms of pain, discomfort etc., by discovering the problem causing the pain, and once that is corrected, the pain goes away. Therefore, helping the problem long term. If your car started making a funny noise you could turn up the radio or you could get the problem looked at and addressed. As chiropractors we prefer to address the main problem, knowing the annoying symptoms will resolve once that is gone.
As chiropractors we also teach people to listen to their bodies and treat them well. What if, when you got your first car at 16, you knew that was the only car you would ever have for the rest of your life. No trade-ins, no upgrade to a newer model. How would you treat that car? Would you change the oil before it needed it, maybe try not to put the“ medal to the metal” very often, as soon as a problem arose, address it before it became much worse? Many of us live running our engines at maximum capacity and not addressing problems that pop up from time to time until the problem is severe. As chiropractors we teach our patients to treat their bodies well and take care of problems before they are affecting our ability to go to work, spend time with our families, and live life to the fullest.
