WELLNESS LOUIE ROBINSON, DC Clear Creek Chiropractic Center Office: 281-525-4130 www.clearcreekchiro.com SPRING INTO YOUR NEW BOD E very health and fitness magazine, writer and editor is telling you about the latest and greatest new fitness fad or workout plan etc. which is going to melt the fat and give you the perfect body by summer. This article is going to discuss how do decide which new and amazing diet/exercise plan is right for you, and if so, set you up to have the most success and with the least amount of trial and error. The first thing you must remember is no matter what you decide to do is you must be consistent. If you are going to try the south beach diet and you quit after 2 weeks because you did everything they said, and you haven’t lost a pound, you’ll never see any success with anything you try. My rule of thumb has always been it takes at least 30 days on any diet to see any noticeable results, 60 days before other people notice your results, and 90 days before you need new jeans. If you don’t intend to dedicate at least 90 days into any plan consistently, you’ll be trying one thing after another for 2 weeks at a time and never seeing the results you want. Remember the consistency you have now is your current diet and level of exercise, the results of which are what you are trying to change. If you don’t change what’s consistent now, you won’t change the results. The second thing is find something you like to do. If you hate running don’t join a running club right off the bat. If you’re forcing yourself to do something you dislike, you’ll eventually find a reason not to do it. Instead try and find something you like to do first. Try biking, swimming, organized sports, yoga, Zumba, etc. until you find something you enjoy doing. Now you have something you like to do that keeps you healthy. The same goes for diet. If giving up bread is too much, find something you can give up easier, fast food for instance, and build on that. One of my favorites to do when I am personally transitioning to a low carb diet, is limit my meals to one source of carbohydrates. So, I could have bread if I didn’t have potatoes, corn, rice etc. This makes it much easier to transition to low carb for me. So, find something you can do and build on that, you can always add a running club down the road. The third thing that will help you have the best chances for success is find an accountability partner. Maybe that’s a friend or a co-worker who also wants to start working out or dieting or both. Having someone else you will be accountable to will drastically increase your chances to stay committed. Consider getting a personal trainer. Having to be accountable to someone who you do not have a personal relationship with is an even more powerful motivator. Having a personal trainer can be expensive, so if one on one training is completely out of the question, there are other less expensive options like group training or group classes. Find a trainer who is independent, meaning not employed by a corporate gym, and they will help you find an option that fits your budget. Finally pick a diet and/or exercise plan you can be consistent with, you like, and hopefully you can find someone else to do with you. If you keep these three major points in mind during your fitness journey, you’ll be way ahead of most people and have the highest chances for success.
