Memorial Hermann Southeast
Hospital Physicians Encourage
Screening for Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women in the United States,
according to the American Cancer Society. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and a time for
people to educate themselves about prevention, risk factors, and the importance of screening for colorectal
cancer. Physicians affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital are encouraging everyone with
associated risks to schedule colonoscopies to be screened for colorectal cancer.
“Those at the highest risk of developing colorectal cancer are individuals who are 50 years or older,
overweight or obese, are not physically active, and have diets high in red or processed meats,” said
Sudhanshu Gogia, gastroenterologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southeast. “In addition, if someone
has a family history of colorectal cancer or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, they are also at
high risk.”
Dr. Gogia recommends starting colonoscopies at age 50 for those who are not at an increased risk of
colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy examines the entire colon and rectum to find polyps or signs of cancer.
To schedule an appointment for a colonoscopy at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital call 713-222-CARE
(2273) and to schedule one at another Memorial Hermann facility, visithttp://www.memorialhermann.org/
