Close your eyes & imagine...
“Imagine you’re a 14-year-old girl living in rural Kenya. You
wake up at the crack of dawn. The sun has hardly risen,
but already it’s hot in your one room thatched-roof hut
that you share with the rest of your family, including four
younger siblings. Why are you up so early when school
only begins in three hours? Because it’s your duty to walk
four kilometers to the nearby lake to fetch jerry cans full of
water for you and your family to use for cooking, cleaning
and drinking that day. Your mom says good morning, and
mentions that she couldn’t make breakfast because there
was no water left over from the day before.
You get dressed, fetch your jerry cans, find your pair of torn
up flip-flops and you’re off. Your day has started. You think
of school. “Will I get back in time to make it to class?” you
ask yourself. The answer is probably not, because after
getting water you need to watch your siblings as your
mom tries to make some money selling produce at the
