Women throughout history have been changing the world with
their inventions. Here are just a few.
Stephanie Kwolek - scientist and inventor
and responsible for Kevlar, a synthetic
material that is five times stronger than
steel. Used in bulletproof vests, skis, safety
helmets and a wide range of constructions
including bridges.
Mary Anderson - inventor of your car’s
windscreen wipers. It was also a woman
inventor - Charlotte Bridgwood, who first
patented the automatic windshield wiper.
Mary Phelps-Jacob - inventor of the good
old brasierre, something we girls couldn’t
really do without now could we.
Bette Nesmith Graham - originally called
‘mistake out’, Bette’s invention of liquid
paper is one of the most famous inventions
of the 20th century.
Ruth Handler - love her invention or hate it,
Ruth created one of the most famous toys
in American history - Barbie. Now if only
she could invent a new Barbie whose was a
little more ‘real’.
Hedy Lamarr - with her co-inventor
George Anthiel, developed a secret
communications system, an unbreakable
