BayG.A.P. SERVICE PROGRAM MODULE 1 HOW TO ASSESS RISKS? Risk assessments are easily conducted by carefully examining factors that could have a negative im- pact on products, the environment and/or workers in your workplace. By doing so, you can assess the sufficiency of protective measures and react by doing more to avoid harm. Deriving adequate control measures is really easily done contrasted with the consequences from accidents or incidents. When conducting your own risk assessment, bare in mind that: • A hazard is anything that may cause harm, such as chemicals, open machinery, working with tools, etc.; • The risk is the likelihood (high, medium, low) of potentially getting harmed through hazard exposure combined with the specifications of serious harm done. Regularly check that you have taken adequate precautions to avoid contamination and/or accidents. FIVE STEPS TO ASSESS THE RISKS IN YOUR ENTERPRISE Step 1: Identify hazards Foremost, the person in charge should determine how produce, soil/biodiversity/pollinators and/or family members/workers are exposed to harm; a helpful procedure could be the following: • Screen your workplace by walking around and checking what could be likely to cause harm (e.g. situations, equipment and machinery, products and substances, practices, etc.). • Ask family members or subordinates (if applicable) for their evaluation. By this, you can collect additional aspects not obvious to you due to different daily procedures. • Check manuals, guidelines and/or labels for chemicals and equipment, as they hold key information clarifying hazards and understanding risks.
