For this 1000 word assignment, you will be analysing TWO short comics. These comics appear on the following two pages. The comics are accompanied by an audio recording (featuring voices from those members of staff I was successfully able to blackmail), so that you can both hear and see the conversations being played out.
In each of the comics, at least two of Grice's maxims are being broken. Your task is to:
1) explain the distinctiveness of pragmatics in linguistic study.
2) analyse and describe the maxims, and how they work.
3) consider what effect is achieved when the characters break those maxims:
- why do you think they broke those maxims?
- what meaning do you think is created?
You will be graded on:
1) the clarity of your description of pragmatics, and your use of sources.
2) your evidence of understanding the maxims.
3) how convincingly you are in explaining the possible meanings created when the maxims are broken.
