When we come to look at Paul Grice’s co-operative principle, we will be learning how the ordinary conversations which we have with each other are dependent upon us following certain rules – or ‘maxims’. For this assignment, you need to demonstrate that you understand the four ‘maxims’ which Grice talks about – and you will be doing this by creating some scenarios in which you can show people either following or breaking these rules.
To do this, you need to:
establish first what those maxims are, and how they might be followed or broken
recognise how these maxims are followed or broken in any given situation
demonstrate that you understand what effect is created when those maxims are followed or broken
