A discussion forum is a less formal mode of assessment than an essay. You are not expected to make contributions which are formally structured and referenced. You are, however, expected to make contributions which are lucid, critical and engaged. For example, here is a contribution which is too formal:

This contribution makes a good point, is critical and informed, and all of this is good. The problem is that it is simply making a statement, when the point of a discussion to engage with others. This contribution does not invite comment, or ask a question, or respond to something said by somebody else. By contrast, the following contribution slips too far in the other direction:
