Catherine Ringer, Eduardo Makaroff & Christoph Müller
— Plaza Francia
interview by
Marco Buso
Plaza Francia is a musical project created by Gotan Project founders Eduardo Makaroff and
Christoph Müller with French singer Catherine Ringer, the legendary voice of alternative-rock
band Les Rita Mitsouko. Together, they released the album A New Tango Song Book in 2014.
Wanting to know more about this artistic summit, I asked them to talk about it with us at Modern
Tango World. It was a very emotional meeting with these music legends.
MTW: Catherine, Eduardo and Christoph, first
of all thanks for being here and for talking about
Plaza Francia with Modern Tango World.
MTW: Let’s start from scratch. How was the Plaza Francia project born? How did it develop after
the Gotan Project experience?
Catherine, Eduardo & Christoph:
Thanks to you Marco, and to all of you at Modern
Tango World! A pleasure to be here.
Eduardo & Christoph: During the past few
years, we formed a side-project - a duo within the
Gotan Project trio. Meanwhile, Philippe CohenSolal, third member of Gotan, started looking for
other musical projects.
As a duo, we started
working on film music.
During the last Gotan
Project tour in 2011, we
had the idea of combining tango with pop-rock.
We were listening to the
traditional tango canción
style invented by Carlos
Gardel by applying new
lyrics to existing tango
dancing tunes. In Plaza
Francia we brought tango
canción into contemporary music, melting tango
with various styles of
pop-rock music from the
fifties to the seventies.
