Modern Tango World N° 10 (Athens, Greece) | Page 38
The evolution of the Roman tango literature has been
further advanced by the organization of literary themed
competitions that have stimulated participationof both
professional and aspiring authors, These writers have
been able to to respond to their dance experience at
a creative level, bringing an abundant supply of stories
and poems. The first of these programs was the Volango,
parole tango e nuvole contest, sponsored by the magazine
La doble hoja del tango which produced two editions. The
2011 prize was won by the story Three minutes by Fran-
cesca Breccia, The second award was made in 2012 to
the tale Come una carezza by Luciano Capriotti..
This overview of Roman tango literature does not pre-
tend to be exhaustive. In Rome, as in the rest of the
world, tango has rarefied and sometimes surreal envi-
ronments, with characters that reflect all the nuances
of the human soul. In this world, the dynamic charac-
teristics of etiquette and improvisation coexist in equal
parts, The milongas with soft lights and dancers with
their shimmering clothes, are an ideal melting pot to
spark literary inspiration.
Another literary contest, Una storia lunga un tango, was
instead marked by a different formula that included the
composition of a story based on precedents taken from
one of two traditional tango songs, A medio luz and
Malena. This project was the result of the collaboration
between the cultural association Elettrotangobar and
the Writing School of Homer. The award attracted non-
tango writers and tango non-writers who have contrib-
uted dozens of stories. Chiara Cattozzi’s story, Assolo di
tango, won at the end of a fierce competition.
