Have you ever wanted to talk to someone, but didn’t want to seem annoying? There
prove to be many struggles in life as well as love. Dorothy Parker in “A Telephone Call”
shows sometimes the biggest struggles are within ourselves. Love can cause pain, as well
as happiness.
The mood of the whole story is in the first line. “PLEASE, God, let him telephone me
now”. Parker shows right away that someone is in distress, because she is worried. She
wants nothing besides the phone to ring with her significant other on the other end.
The next few paragraphs, she tries numerous things to try and make the phone ring.
“If I didn't think about it, maybe the telephone might ring,” or “if I counted five hundred by
fives, it might ring by that time”. This shows that she is desperate to hear from him.
Everything that she does comes up empty.
Later, she starts assuming things that aren’t necessarily true, but she can’t help
jumping to conclusions. “I know you shouldn't keep telephoning them--I know they don't like
that. When you do that they know [
