The main idea of this story was a man choosing between his
wife and job. A week before his wedding he received a message
about government position. During this period the man was under
stress from the new found attention he was getting from his poetry
and government achievements. He then began to start guessing
about his marriage where at a point he had rocky roads with
someone other than his wife. Then he received a letter on how
she felt. They went on to get married and the man felt relieved
that he no longer had to choose between his wife and his job.
Sometimes throughout one’s life one can be confronted with
numerous situations with each different action resulting in a
completely different outcome. However just in Anderson’s “The
Other Woman” our choices now determine our future.
The main character has to make decisions that will affect his
impending marriage. Despite the fact that he is engaged he still
has an affair with a Tobacconist’s wife, and rendezvous with her
several times. While his activities continue in the dwindling
amount of time before his approaching marriage. Eventually he
chose between his fiancé and the other woman, and he
disentangles himself from his affair.
In conclusion throughout our lives we continue to be
confronted with difficult situations, just like the main character in
Anderson’s “The Other Woman”.
