MC 947
Riding with the
family
Regular 947 listeners will not only know
Alex Caige’s voice, but will also know
this will be his third time competing
in Johannesburg’s biggest cycling
event. But few know that he has also
challenged other members of his
family to ride it with him.
He brings you the
traffic and co-hosts the
Afternoon Drive Show with
Anele on 947, but this year
Alex Caige will be riding
both the 55 kilometre
Momentum 947 Mountain
Bike Challenge and the
Momentum 947 Cycle
Challenge.

T
his year, Alex Caige will do both the Momentum 947
Mountain Bike Challenge on 9 November and the Momentum 947
Cycle Challenge on 16 November.
“I’m quite active sports wise and I am always keen to try out different
sports, and I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie and if I see a challenge,
then I go for it,” said the 24-year-old traffic reporter and co-host of
947’s Afternoon Drive Show with Anele.
But how did he end up cycling these events in the first place?
According to Alex, “somebody” challenged him to do the
Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge shortly after he started working for
947.
“I thought to myself, that’s nearly 100 kilometres. That’s to Pretoria
and nearly half-way back. That’s far. And the guy who challenged
me said ‘well there you go, there is a challenge for you!’ and I started
training,” Alex said.
“They said to me ‘Why don’t
you put like tread on your
tyres and do the mountain
bike challenge?’ so I rode both.
As it did for most of us, the bug bit Alex, and he rode his first
Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge in 2012, on his mountain bike,
which he specially equipped with road “slick” tyres.
And then, in 2013, “somebody” said to Alex that the organisers were
really trying to encourage riders to take part in the Momentum 947
Mountain Bike Challenge.
