“T
hey say that every heaven’s
got a thousand rooms; So take me on that
freedom ride!”
And an estimated 6 000 people, from
professional cyclists to six-year-old boys and
girls did exactly that on Sunday 20 July 2014.
Promoted by both government and various
cycling organisations and companies,
the Freedom Ride set off from the Nelson
Mandela bridge in Braamfontein and followed
a route that highlighted many places of
historical interest. These included Walter and
Albertina Sisulu’s place of burial, the Bill Jardim
Stadium and Soweto’s own tourist attraction,
Vilakazi Street, before heading back to
Braamfontein.
