“ I liked doing art as a kid, just for fun. In Grade 9-10 I joined Kingswood College’ s art course even though I wasn’ t part of the school. That was to learn some more skills, I guess, which was super cool. I just like doing art and think it’ s nice to look at. I haven’ t quite worked out how to sell my work, but every now and then I try and get a commission. There’ s not much time to do art anymore with all the training, work and stuff … and I suppose being an adult! But when I can, I still do commissions to raise funds for climbing World Cups and am going to China in September for two events, so I’ ve got about four commissions already and been hectically busy trying to paint and draw. Mostly I use oil paint on canvas. That’ s my preferred medium. But I’ ll also use graphite pencils( black / white) and coloured pencils. Those are my three mediums. I really love art, and if I could find a way to sell a bit more I’ d love that, but for now it’ s a means to an end to getting funding for climbing.”
“ I created Reinhardt Hamman Photography as my love of photography started in 2014 on my very first overseas trip to Brazil. My dad bought me my first camera for my 21st birthday. I took pics in Brazil, and on our next trip, the guys kept on asking me to bring my camera and it just grew from there, getting to a point where I started putting out feelers to agencies. I approached Stellenbosch FC, took a few shots there and since then have done countless PSL matches, URC rugby matches, Springboks v Australia, Bafana football and Afcon games. I love it, and it’ s given me a different perspective on sport. My wife then started working at Brackenfell High. I took pics at their rugby matches and was approached by their marketing manager … now I’ m the school’ s marketing manager. It leaves very little time for photos, although outside of school hours, I’ m quite busy. I’ d still love to do more sport like the URC and Currie Cup games.
When it comes to football, I’ ve been shooting for Backpagepix where Ryan Wilkisky has been incredible in terms of giving me opportunities. It’ s an incredible outlet for me and keeps me focused in terms of my creativity as well.”
“ I’ m a couture / fashion designer specialising in bridal gowns, evening wear, matric dances, basically any ladies wear. Originally from Cape Town, I moved to Johannesburg in 2013. This is my 13th year of being a fashion designer … I’ ve only been lifting for six years. I’ m known more as a weightlifter because it’ s more publicised, but fashion designing is my full-time business, and my life is probably 50 / 50 between weightlifting and design. I’ m a designer first and foremost … but became very passionate about weightlifting, and I’ m doing some coaching myself. I’ m very aware that fashion and weightlifting are truly polar opposite ideas. My business, Laryne Jefferies Pty Ltd, is based in Bassonia, Johannesburg, where all the gowns are made by me and my team … I was already making some of my own clothes when I was about 16-17 years old. I studied design at CPUT, Cape Town, before getting an internship with [ top designer ] Gert-Johan Coetzee. I worked there for eight years, managing his studio and as assistant designer, and since 2020 I’ ve been working full time for myself for the same time as I’ ve been a weightlifter – it’ s obviously quite hectic with time schedules, but I love both equally and couldn’ t imagine life without either!”
