Imagine Running with 60 000 others
Celebrate Independence Day with a bang at the AJC Peachtree Road Race, one of the largest 10km races in the world. Join over 60 000 participants as you race through Atlanta’ s historic streets, fueled by patriotic fervor and the cheers of the crowd. It’ s one of the most fun road races in America, and also among the most popular ones.
The AJC Peachtree Road Race is a series of two 10km runs held annually in Atlanta, once during the first weekend of January and the other on Independence Day. They are held on the same course in opposite directions, similar to the Comrades Marathon, but up and down are held in the same year.
The“ South” Peachtree( down run) was founded in 1970 starting with 150 runners, ten years later it had grown to 20 000 runners. By 1998 the race was welcoming 55 000 runners and in 2011 it expanded to 60 000, becoming one of the world’ s largest 10km races.
The race has become a citywide tradition attracting over 70 000 amateur and professional runners entering the race lottery to try and claim one of the 60 000 spots. The event also includes a wheelchair race( known as the Shepherd Center wheelchair division), which precedes the foot race. In recent years, the race also has a special division for soldiers stationed in the Middle East. The race attracts some of the world’ s best 10km runners and has served as the United States men’ s and women’ s 10km championships.
