TEAM SA’ S SCOTTISH MEDAL MISSION
A team of 110 South Africans will be chasing medals at a very different-looking Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August.
That ' s almost half the number that competed in Birmingham four years ago, reflecting a dramatically scaled-down Games featuring just 10 sports. Even so, Team South Africa will still feature a host of proven contenders, led by a strong contingent of former Commonwealth medallists in the pool.
Leading the charge will be Pieter Coetzé( see pg. 6-7 for more on the Pretoria superstar), while also out to defend her titles will be Lara van Niekerk, who claimed double gold – in the 50 and 100m breaststroke – last time out. Also still in the mix and set to compete at an incredible fifth Commonwealth Games is Chad le Clos, who, having already amassed a collection of 18 medals since his debut in 2010, is just one short of the all-time men ' s record.
