THRILLS AND HILLS AT THE BALWIN SPORTS
JEPPE MARATHON
The Balwin Sports Jeppe Marathon once again proved why it is a highlight event on the road running calendar . With a challenging route winding through Bedfordview and Edenvale , runners tackled a tough first 10km filled with inclines before the halfway mark . However , relief came with the exhilarating downhill past Gillooly ’ s Farm , only for the final kilometer to deliver a sting in the tail with a challenging uphill push to the finish .
Race day offered something for everyone , from the full 42km marathon and its single-lap counterpart , the 21km , to the fast-paced 10km race and the fun 5km run around Senderwood . The atmosphere was electric as runners of all levels pushed their limits , cheered on by enthusiastic supporters lining the route .
The elite runners delivered standout performances , with Philani Nkomo of Manoni Running Club clinching victory in the men ’ s marathon in a superb time of 2:26:50 . In the women ’ s race , Melinda Jansen Van Vuuren from Hollywood AC CGA took the top spot , crossing the finish line in 3:06:28 .
The 21km race saw Sakhile Sangweni ( Inkamana AC ) dominate the men ’ s field in 1:09:37 , while the everconsistent Lebo Diana Phalula ( Boxer Superstores AC ) took the women ’ s title in 1:16:21 while claiming second place overall !
In the shorter distances , experienced runner Gladwin Mzazi ( Boxer Superstores AC ) claimed the men ’ s 10km title in 31:51 , and Tebogo Mokgosinyane ( Nedbank Running Club CG ) secured victory in the women ’ s 10km with a time of 39:19 .
