CLEANING UP THE MESS GORGEOUS MORNING RUN Thanks to your team for a really great mag, it’s often referred to while a bunch of us are out running. And so again this morning we thought of it and decided to share some pics with you of our trail run, taken by Rory Manning. Nothing quite matches up to an early morning run through Summerveld in KZN, home to the country’s top race horses. Getting to watch the sun rise over a clear winter’s morning while watching the horses train is spectacular, and we are so lucky to be able to experience this just minutes from our homes. – Erika Korte & Nicole Korte, Summerveld Looks like a stunning setting for a run! – Ed. RUNNING TO BEAT TB UPDATE Thank you once again for featuring my story about contracting and recovering from tuberculosis in your February 2017 edition. Just thought I’d give you an update on my campaign using running and cycling to raise awareness that TB is curable, as well as fund food parcels for It is so sad to see how many water sachets are thrown on the road during races, but also good to hear someone get shouted at by other runners if they do this. The problem I have during races is with the bins: They are often placed so close to each other and the water tables. By the time you have had your drink, a block away, there are no bins. If they were spaced out better, I am sure they will be more useful. I have also noticed that the people handing out sachets or cups of Coke hold 2 or 3 in their hand, and when runners take one as they pass, they often drop the second or third sachet or cup, so you have still more sachets and cups all over! – Teresa Coetzee, Krugersdorp I’m not a fan of runners shouting at each other, but our #runclean campaign has definitely helped make many more people aware of the problem. – Ed. FANTASTIC VIC FALLS I have always wanted to run the Victoria Falls road race, and all I can say is wow, unreal! The run over the bridge from Zimbabwe to Zambia with the Falls under your feet was just too beautiful, and our times went out the window as we took pictures and stared at this great sight. You run over the bridge into Zambia where they turn you around and you head back over the same bridge… where we took more pictures, as if we hadn’t just been there moments earlier. We were in the wild and saw all sorts of animals. At one point I had an elephant less than 50m from me, but they have guards all along the road to protect you and make sure TB sufferers through sponsorship for the mileage I do. you’re safe. The water points were great, tons of water, music, dancing and so on, but the best part of the run was the smiles of the people at the watering points, and in fact, all around us. The people of Victoria Falls are happy, bubbly and only want to help. Since running the West Coast Marathon in Langebaan in April, I was invited by SANTA (South African National Tuberculosis We did the Victoria Falls walk as well as the Chobe River in Botswana and phew… unreal. do the most amazing work to help TB sufferers. Also in June, the first seven food parcels were In the six days that we were there, we travelled through four countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. I can go At the time of writing, my next event is the Cape Town Festival of Running 50km in late July, and a further seven parcels will be ‘rolled out’ at the end of July. – Neal Stacey, Cape Town Johannesburg Association) to attend their annual conference in Swellendam in June as a guest speaker. They handed over to the Regional Manager of SANTA in Camps Bay. The parcels were put together by a pre-school in Camps Bay called Kids on the Bay, and were then given to TB patients in the Mitchells Plain area. Great to see that your ongoing campaign is making a difference in the lives of those who need the most help. Keep up the great work! – Ed. on and on about how spectacular the entire trip was, but I’d rather you experience it for yourself. It was a run of a lifetime, and another box on my bucket list most definitely ticked. – Bruce Meyerson, This one is still on my bucket list, Bruce. – Ed.
