You don’ t stop. Neither should your supplement
Swim done... good time, feeling good, it was almost like I watched myself swim. T1 … Take my bike and run to the mounting line. It is all about the bike leg, so here we go. Don’ t try to push too hard, I keep reminding myself. The supporters are awesome, motivating. Roads are rough, but manageable. This is far …
T2, off the bike eventually, time good, still feeling good, there is enough time to complete the run, even if I must walk at stages. But the spectators do not allow you to slow down, they motivate you all the way to never stop moving forward. The other DTT athletes also keep motivating each other.
My Longest run in 30 years, and the athletes are becoming less and less as the kilometres pass. Time looks better than planned … Then it is my turn to experience the finish line crowd. Just awesome!
Third Impressions: Rudolf van Rensburg
When a friend asked me to participate in triathlons, who knew that I would eventually be running on the red carpet in Port Elizabeth, hearing the words,“ You are an Ironman!” But commitment, discipline and dedication are three words that I have come to know very well, with the help of my Dare to Tri clubmates, as they are likeminded people with the same goals.
This is where I met Coach Derick. He is a coach that helps you determine and reach your individual goals, and his programme is realistic and can be done whilst still having a full-time job.
Race day being the big unexpected for me, my nerves got the better of me, but I did my last packing and preparation, and then it was off to bed for an early night. On race day, all I kept thinking of was just to finish … This thought was probably shared by the other 2000 athletes standing with me on Hobie beach. The weather was perfect, but the pumping music and cheers from the spectators were drowned out by my frantic heart.
Before I knew it, the swim portion was over and I was in transition getting ready for the bike. Once on the bike, my plan was to tackle it 45km at a time. Saved by my special needs bag once, it was smooth riding to 160km. From there, however, every kilometre felt never-ending, but the roaring crowd on Beach Road helped me realise the end was in sight.
The spectators cheering you on by name, like old friends rooting for you, makes you forget you only just started to run. Still, the last 10km section was the toughest part of the race for me. My mind was playing tricks with my tired body, but here is where the determination and dedication took over, and slowly, with one foot in front of the other, I made it.
What an incredible experience to get to the finish line of Ironman African Championships 2017. This is one incredible race, and with the support of family, friends and my club, I now know that anything is possible.
Looking Ahead
So what’ s next for Dare to Tri? Our season finishes with the last two big events of the triathlon year, the MiWay Ultra Sun City and Ironman 70.3 Durban, and then we take a short break before starting the new season in July!
