More info at www.modernathlete.co.za/events. 35th Johnson Crane Hire Marathon, Half Marathon & 10km When: Sunday 29 January Where: Sahara Park Willowmoore, Harpur Avenue, Benoni, Central Gauteng GO BIG IN BENONI Entries are open for the 35th Johnson Crane Hire Marathon, Half Marathon & 10km hosted by Benoni Harriers. This popular event is the ideal opportunity to bag that first marathon for the year and get in your Comrades or Two Oceans qualifier. The route is a doublelapper and is relatively flat, allowing runners to push hard for that PB time or sub-5:00 qualifier, and for those who are still easing into things in the New Year, there are 21km, 10km and 5km options. Note: Entries for the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon closed 31 December, so we hope you didn’t miss out on this popular event. Both the marathon and half marathon will be timed by Peak Timing using the ChampionChip system, so make sure your chip is attached to your running shoe’s laces before you leave home! COP-CHASED TO A NEW PB Modern Athlete Bobbies Half Marathon, 10km & 5km When: Sunday 5 February Where: Greenstone Shopping Centre, Greenstone Hill, Johannesburg, Central Gauteng If you will permit us to be a bit creative with running puns, this event is a great opportunity to run with the police instead of from them. Just kidding, but now that we have caught your attention, why not sign up for an undulating run through Edenvale, Illiondale and Greenstone on what is considered a fast and flat route, where a PB is on the cards. It’s also an event designed to cater for the whole family, with three distances on offer. So join Modern Athlete, Bobbies, BibFix, Greenstone Shopping Centre, Peak Timing and Pureau for a great run. This event should be on everyone’s running race calendar. Note: Entries for this race closed during the course of December, once the entry cap of 3500 entries had been reached. The race will once again be timed by Peak Timing using the ChampionChip system, so remember your chip! Pick n Pay Marathon, Half Marathon, 8km & 4km When: Sunday 12 February Where: Saheti School, Civin Drive, Senderwood, Johannesburg, Central Gauteng THE RACE TO PICK Jeppe Quondam Athletics Club is excited to once again be hosting this event at the beautiful Saheti School, and it really does cater for the whole family thanks to all the distances on offer. The marathon and half marathon races are limited to a total of 6000 athletes, while the two fun runs are limited to a combined 3000 entries. Pre-entries only for the two long distances, but entries will still be taken for the fun runs at pre-race registration and on race day. Good news for Comrades Marathon runners is that your qualifying time will automatically be uploaded to the Comrades database thanks to the race being timed by ChampionChip. Note: Entries for the Pick n Pay Marathon & Half Marathon will close on Sunday 5 February, or when the entry cap is reached, so to avoid potential disappointment, rather get your entry in early. DURBAN ULTRA RETURNS AT LAST MiWay Durban Ultra When: Sunday 5 March Where: Sunkist Beach, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal After a 20-year absence, what used to be one of the world’s most iconic triathlon races will return when the MiWay Durban Ultra takes place. Athletes will take on a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run, and there will also be the shorter Sprint distance as well as relay options, so everybody can be part of the action, and best of all is that the events will finish at the landmark Moses Mabhida Stadium, which also host the race Expo. Other bonuses will be the M4 road being closed to traffic for the bike leg, and the race will double as the South African Long Distance Triathlon Championships with numerous elite and age group titles up for grabs. Note: Entries have opened and athletes are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible due to the limited entries available. 28 See you there! ISSUE 90 JANUARY 2017 / www.modernathlete.co.za
