Johann le Roux, 41, from Worcester is a CDC mega-veteran: he’s completed
all 22 tours to date, and is due to ride the upcoming 23rd tour on 21 November
2015. In 22 years’ of Coronation Double Centuries, he has cycled some 4444
kilometres – more than cycling from Cape Town to Nairobi!
He sums up the race’s ethos as he remarks: “There’s no substitute for experience
and muscle memory but the CDC has taught me that team spirit and the will
to finish is of utmost importance for completing the race. It’s more rewarding
seeing every team member complete the race than posting a fast time.”
Endurance. Stamina. Guts. Glory. The CDC really does
have it all; truly, a double century for the lion-hearted.
The Coronation Double Century at-a-glance:
• The race starts and ends in the Overberg town of Swellendam.
The route takes participants through parts of the Overberg
including Montagu, the Tradouw Pass and the particularly jarring
seven kilometres Op De Tradouw
• To ensure the safety of all participants, the race is capped at
250 teams (of between six and 12 riders) which comes to a total
maximum number of 3000 participants
• The race is open to male, female or mixed teams
• Each team has a support vehicle for medical and bicycling
emergencies as well as refreshments and general moraleboosting. The support vehicles only meet up with their teams
in Ashton, around 115 kilometres into the race. Support vehicles
are not permitted to follow their riders from Ashton, but will
instead be detoured via an alternate route to Bonnievale where
a Team Support Zone will be made available to teams.
• Each team is allowed limited time to complete the race with cutoff points along the route
The CDC is a
team event.
• Those riders in teams who all 12 cross the line with no more
than 15 minutes between their first and last finisher are awarded
a Charles Milner medal for embodying the spirit of the CDC:
teamwork, endurance and sheer stamina
