Ma RACE ADVERTORIAL
The People’s Race
The Old Mutual Soweto Marathon is widely considered a ‘bucket list item’ for South
African runners, and on 1 November we will once again see a huge field turn out for one of
Johannesburg’s most popular races.
True to tradition, the marathon will connect runners from all over the
world to six significant heritage sites dotted along the 42.2km route,
including Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Chris Hani
Baragwanath Hospital, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Regina Mundi
Catholic Church, Morris Isaacson High School and Vilakazi Street (the
only known street in the world that was once home to two Nobel Peace
Laureates, President Nelson Mandela and Archbisop Desmond Tutu).
This year the 10km route will also take runners into Diepkloof, while the
half marathon route will run through Orlando.
T
he race will once again start and finish at the Johannesburg Expo
Centre, Nasrec, with runners taking to the roads of Soweto in
either the full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1km) or
10km. Sello Khunou, Chairperson of the Soweto Marathon Trust said, “We
are happy to be back at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec for the
start and finish of the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon. This venue has been
a part of the race since its beginning and it really is the perfect venue to
be the host of this historic race.”
