Ma advertorial Old Favourite T he Old Eds Half has been on the calendar for over 35 years because it hits the proverbial spot with runners year after year with its scenic route through the beautiful suburbs of Melrose, Killarney and Houghton, plus solid organisation, great vibe and value for money for the athletes. It also makes a great ‘season-opener’ for those may have gone into semihibernation mode for the winter, and this race always pulls a good crowd. Coming Round the Mountain… PPC Cement Riebeeckberg Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km & 5km, Riebeeck West, Boland, 1 August The Riebeeckberg Mountain looms over the sleepy Boland towns of Riebeeck-Kasteel and Riebeeck West, forming a stunning backdrop for the annual race that visits these towns, and three decades on from the first running, it remains a firm favourite with many runners in the Cape. One of the highlights of the 30th running of the Marathon was a 30th consecutive finish by Bryan Rothman (left) of Brackenfell Athletic Club. The grandmaster came home in 4:15:50, 159th out of just over 350 finishers in the marathon, to maintain his record as the only runner with a full house of medals from this challenging classic. Line honours in the marathon went to Phumlani Nxusani (Nedbank) in 2:31:18, with Lee-Shay Willemse (Velocity) claiming the women’s title in 3:24:14 in her first marathon. The 21km wins went to Mthandazo Qhina (Nedbank) and Candyce Hall (Carbineers) in 1:07:57 and 1:29:32 respectively, while Siviwe Nkombi (Itheko, 31:16) and Mariëtte Strauss (Tygerberg, 43:53) were first over the line in the 10km.
